About
Trained as an architect, Ulysses Sean Vance began experimenting with translating quantified data on disparities into correlating values in shape and color to inform his practice in architecture since the turn of the century. He has since mastered various tools, from generative algorithmic modeling to machine learning and robotic manufacturing, and he has used them to inform multi-media art that interrogates the role of materiality in access and social justice.
"In making architecture that is jovial, I am pursuing an art that is accessible and inclusive to the broadest group of individuals for the sake of playfulness in pursuit of wellbeing," says Vance. He creates lively interpretations of objects and sculptural follies that bring excitement to the city and invite people, no matter their size, shape, or orientation, to engage them. "In my work, I ask what I need to bring the most distant of people into an activity, into my work, springing outward from them as the social focus on building the capacity of a community.
